What is the true cost of delivering impact in East Africa?

Non-profit organisations (NPOs) across East Africa navigate an increasingly complex operational environment, characterised by declining donor funding and rising operational costs. However, when it comes to budgeting, procurement and managing administrative overheads, the sector has historically operated without reliable, regional benchmark data.

While the private sector relies heavily on sophisticated benchmarking data, the non-profit sector in East Africa lacks a dedicated, regional baseline for operational and procurement expenses.

To bridge this information gap, the African NGO Fundraising Hub and the African Institute for Children Studies (AICS) are conducting a regional survey, Understanding the Procurement and Operational Costs of Non-Profit Organisations in East Africa, to better understand NPOs’ spending and procurement practices in the region.

Detailed information about these issues can help reduce costs, improve organisational efficiency and inform practical interventions that strengthen the financial health and sustainability of the non-profit sector beyond traditional grant funding.

We are calling on non-profit directors, finance managers and procurement officers across East Africa – Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda – to contribute to this important study.
