For many African NGOs, the question of financial sustainability has moved from background concern to urgent strategic priority. The funding environment across the continent is tightening, donor priorities are shifting, and the organisations best positioned to weather this transition are those actively diversifying their income sources.
Yet, the path from interest to implementation is rarely straightforward. Questions of mission alignment, organisational readiness, governance and commercial viability all demand careful consideration. The risk of mission drift is real, as is the temptation to overestimate what earned income can deliver and how quickly. At the same time, dismissing social enterprise as too complex or too commercial would be a missed opportunity, especially for NGOs that already possess assets, expertise or service capacity that others are willing to pay for.
Join @AfricanNGOs and Hexa Media Africa on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, for the next NGO Power Talk titled, “Income Diversification in the African NGO Sector – Exploring Social Enterprise Models.”
This webinar builds on the strategic framing established during the NGO Power Talk on 14 May 2026. It shifts the conversation from principle to practice. The focus will be on examining what social enterprise models look like in African NGO contexts, what makes these models viable, and the leadership, governance and organisational capacity required to pursue them responsibly.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
➡️ Identify the main social enterprise models, including fee-for-service, product-based, trading arms and cross-subsidy arrangements, and assess which are most relevant to their organisational context and mission.
➡️ Recognise common failure points, including underpricing, limited commercial skills, resource constraints and weak governance, and understand how to mitigate these risks.
➡️ Distinguish between a business model problem and a capability problem, recognising that a viable idea and the organisational capacity to execute it are two distinct challenges that require different responses.
The panellists will be representatives of African NGOs with practical experience in introducing social enterprise components to their income diversification and financial sustainability strategies.
Confirmed Panellists:
➡️ John Obuaba, Executive Director, Celdar Foundation;
➡️ Semerian Sankori, Founder and Executive Director, Patinaai Osim;
➡️ Elizaphan Ongechi, Executive Director, Nguzo Africa Community Foundation;
➡️ Others to be confirmed.
Moderator: Tonia Dabwe, Founder, SoVenture & Mineke Foundation
